About Us

In Switzerland, symphonic music expresses itself with the great professional orchestras, which were born in connection to their respective cities and cantons, starting with the Luzerne Symphony Orchestra established in 1806, followed by the Tonhalle Orchestra of Zurich in 1868, the Orchestra of the Suisse Romande in 1918, then all the others.

The idea of creating a single musical body representative of Swiss musical culture was first proposed by Ernst Ansermet with the OSR in 1918, then later by Toscanini with the orchestra of the Lucerne Festival in 1938. The idea was consolidated in 2016 with a group of Swiss musicians who combined their energy and professionalism to create the Swiss National Orchestra.
